Walled-Up Wife is based on a traditional poem from the Balkan region, known in Serbian as Zidanje Skadra. The original poem recounts the immurement of a woman within a wall, so the drawing becomes an interpretation of that wall: an inverted perspective of endless bricks, the absence of light, an impenetrable surface from within. The pieces are made on paper in black ink, many carrying organic intaglio forms that resemble wounds or scars. Assembled from smaller fragments into a larger whole, they are nailed directly to the wall. Displayed differently depending on the space they inhabit, the drawings suggest a process in motion, creating additional perforations in the pieces themselves. The registers remain after every event — a trace of every move, every action, inevitably present.
